Can You Use Gas Lanterns Indoors? Yes. Here Is What It Takes

Published as part of the Flambeaux Lighting How We Build It series — real answers to real questions from our customers.

It is one of the questions we hear most often, especially from hospitality clients. Hotels, restaurants, and event venues want the warmth and atmosphere of a real gas flame indoors. The question is whether it can be done safely.

The answer is yes, but it is not the same as an outdoor installation. Two safety features are required when a gas lantern goes inside, and neither one is optional. Steve walks through both in the video below.

@flambeauxlighting Bring timeless ambiance indoors ✨🏡 Our handcrafted gas lanterns aren’t just for entryways and courtyards — they can create a stunning statement inside your home too. The Thermocouple: Your First Line of Defense

A thermocouple is a small heat-sensing device built into the burner assembly. When the flame is burning, it stays open and gas flows normally. If the flame goes out for any reason, whether from a drop in gas pressure, a draft, or anything else, the thermocouple detects the loss of heat and automatically shuts off the gas supply to the fixture.

The lantern will not relight on its own. It stays off until someone manually relights it. That is intentional. No gas accumulates, no undetected hazard sits in the room. It is a simple, reliable mechanism that has been used in gas appliances for decades, and it is a must-have on any indoor application.

The Electronic Ignition System: Control and Monitoring Built In

The second option is an electronic ignition system, which takes the installation a step further. With electronic ignition, the lantern can be turned on and off from a standard wall switch, which is often a requirement in commercial settings where staff need reliable, convenient control over the fixtures.

Beyond the convenience, the system includes internal monitoring components that track gas pressure and confirm the burner is operating correctly at all times. If anything falls outside of normal parameters, the system shuts the fixture off automatically. It is a more involved installation than a thermocouple alone, but for hospitality environments where the lanterns run on a schedule and staff aren’t relighting fixtures by hand, it is the right solution.

For Indoor Use, Both Are Non-Negotiable

The thermocouple and the electronic ignition system are not competing options. In many indoor installations, both are specified together. The thermocouple provides the baseline safety shutoff. The electronic ignition adds control and active monitoring on top of that.

Every Flambeaux gas lantern can be configured for indoor use with either or both of these features built in at the time of manufacture. If you are specifying gas lanterns for a hotel lobby, restaurant, or any interior commercial space, tell us that when you call. We will make sure the fixture is built correctly for the application from the start.

The Granada: A New Gas Lantern with a Longer Look

Published as part of the Flambeaux Lighting New Designs series.

Most gas lanterns follow the same proportions. Short body, standard glass panels, flat bracket on the wall. They look fine. The Granada looks like we spent more time on it.

It starts as a close relative of our England lantern, a shape that’s been in our catalog for years. We took that silhouette, stretched the body taller, added decorative finials at the top and bottom, and put it on a gooseneck bracket. The result is a gas lantern with real vertical presence. It’s the kind of fixture that reads from the street.

What Goes Into It

The finials are the detail that sets it apart. One at the top, one at the bottom, both machined to complement the elongated body. They’re not decorative in the way a sticker is decorative. They complete the silhouette and give the fixture a finished quality you notice up close.

The gooseneck bracket adds to the overall height and projects the lantern off the wall with a clean arc. On a wide facade or beside a tall front door, that projection matters. It keeps the lantern visible and proportional rather than lost against the wall surface.

The Granada is being released in electric first. Not every home has a gas line at the entry, and for those that don’t, electric gives you the same copper body, the same finishes, and the same bracket with a straightforward installation. If you want it in gas or propane, call us and we’ll talk through what that involves for your specific wall.

Built to Order in Louisiana

Every Granada is built to order in our Louisiana workshop. Solid copper body. Four finish options: Raw Copper, Aged Copper, Dark Oxidation, and Natural Weathered. Dark Oxidation is exclusive to Flambeaux, applied by hand in-house and not available anywhere else.

The Carriage House Scroll Lantern: When the Bracket Is Part of the Design

Published as part of the Flambeaux Lighting New Designs series.

A lot of outdoor gas lanterns treat the bracket as an afterthought. Pick a lantern, pick a bracket, bolt them together. The Carriage House Scroll Lantern doesn’t work that way.

The scroll bracket is part of the design from the start. It adds considerable height beyond the lantern body itself and gives the whole assembly a presence that a standard wall bracket simply can’t match. On a carriage house door, a wide garage facade, or a front entry column, that height is exactly what makes the fixture look right for the scale of the wall.

What Goes Into It

The lantern body is solid copper in our standard Aged Copper finish, a warm patina that suits traditional architecture without looking like a replica. At the top, a decorative ring caps the fixture in a way most lanterns skip. On all four glass panels, brass crossbars run across the face. It’s a small detail that adds a layer of depth and catches the light in a way plain glass doesn’t.

The Carriage House Scroll comes in two standard sizes: 20 inch and 26 inch. Those measurements are for the lantern body. The scroll bracket adds meaningful height on top of that, so the installed fixture sits taller than either number suggests. If neither size works for your wall, we build to order and handle custom sizing regularly. Reach out before you order and we’ll figure it out with you.

Gas Lantern Mounting on Siding — The Contoured Plate Fix

When Your Siding Has a Slope: How Flambeaux Solves the Mounting Problem

Published as part of the Flambeaux Lighting How We Build It series — real solutions for real installation challenges.

Most lantern manufacturers never think about your siding. They build a flat mounting plate — and they leave the rest of the problem to you.

The thing is, siding isn’t flat. Every board sits on a slope. Vinyl, hardie board, lap siding — all of it angles slightly outward at the bottom, the way it’s designed to shed water.

Put a standard flat mounting plate against that surface and you’ve got a gap on one side, a stress point on the other, and a lantern that doesn’t sit straight.

The traditional fix is to cut into the siding. You’re removing material, inserting a flat backer, and hoping the patch work holds up. It’s time-consuming, it’s expensive, and it introduces delay into a project that was already moving.

We’ve got a better solution!

@flambeauxlighting Not all homes are built the same… so why should every lantern be? ✨ At Flambeaux, we custom craft lanterns to fit YOUR home’s unique siding, style, and vision — from brick and stucco to Hardie board, vinyl, wood, and more. Every detail is built with precision so your lighting looks seamless, elegant, and made just for you. 🔥🏡 Because great lighting shouldn’t just fit your house… it should elevate it. #Flambeaux #CustomLanterns #ExteriorLighting #LuxuryLighting #HomeDesign ♬ Saturday – wizzow

The Contoured Mounting Plate

At Flambeaux, we can manufacture a contoured slope mounting plate — a bracket machined to match the exact pitch of your siding. When it sits against your wall, it makes full contact across the entire surface. The lantern hangs plumb. Nothing flexes. No cutting required.

It’s a small detail with a significant outcome. The lantern looks right because it’s mounted right. The seal against the wall is clean. And your installer doesn’t have to improvise.

Why This Matters More Than It Looks

A mounting plate that doesn’t sit flat creates more than an aesthetic problem. Over time, movement in that joint — from thermal expansion, wind load, or simply seasonal shifting of the siding — works against the fasteners.

In coastal environments, that’s compounded by humidity and salt air. A flush, full-contact mount is simply the more durable installation.

For contractors and builders, there’s a scheduling dimension too. A job that requires unexpected site work — cutting siding, sourcing a backer, waiting on a patch — is a job that moves on the calendar. Getting the right hardware from the start is the easier path.

What to Tell Us When You Call

If your home has vinyl siding, hardie board, or any form of horizontal lap siding, mention it before your order is placed. We’ll ask a few straightforward questions:

  • What type of siding — vinyl, hardie board, wood lap?
  • Approximate pitch of the siding board (your installer will know this, or we can help you measure)
  • Mount type — flush mount, bracket mount, or hanging?
  • Location — coastal areas may warrant aluminum hardware rather than steel

From there, we can build the contoured plate as part of your order. No separate vendor. No back-and-forth. It ships with the lantern.

Special Situations Are What We Do

The siding challenge is one example of a broader principle: we specialize in helping you get what you need on almost any application. Unusual wall depths. Angled rooflines. Windy coastal locations that need a thermocouple rather than an electronic igniter. Exterior columns with non-standard profiles. Post-tops on custom diameters.

We’ve been building these lanterns by hand since 2004. That means we’ve seen most of what a real installation looks like. If your situation doesn’t fit the standard path, it almost certainly fits ours.
