Electronic Ignition Systems for Gas Lanterns

Do You Really Want One?

Over the last few years, more and more customers have heard about the benefit of electronic ignition systems for gas lanterns.

On the surface, what’s not to like? Just the click of a button turns on your lantern, and you don’t waste unnecessary gas by running the lantern when you’re not around.
Sounds simple, right?

Unfortunately it’s not quite that easy. Electronic igniters bring with them a few inherent problems. Let’s dig deeper so you can make an informed decision before you buy

Facts About Electronic Ignition Systems

Here are a few facts about electronic ignition systems for gas lanterns that you may want to take into account before making a buying decision:

  • Estimated Monthly Cost Per Standard Gas Lantern – $15.00 (Continuous Burning)
  • Cost of Electronic Ignition System – $480.00
  • Estimated Savings per Month using electronic ignition systems – $ 7.50
  • Estimated Number of Months to Pay for itself – 64 Months

We know that our high quality gas lanterns will last for years to come, so you might think that taking roughly 5 years to recoup the upfront cost of the ignition system makes sense. And if that was the only issue, it might. However, with any type of electronic system there are maintenance issues to consider. After all, what happens if it breaks?

Electronic Ignition Systems come with a 1 Year Warranty. However, these Systems are known to have issues over time and will eventually need adjusting and repair. If you factor in the cost of repairs and/or replacement, it’s almost impossible to justify the cost benefit of the system.

We Want You To Be Happy

While we do offer these systems as options on our lanterns, it is difficult for us to recommend them because of their life expectancy.

We do recommend the Optional Safety Thermocouple which will stop gas flow if the lantern were to blow out for any reason. The lantern would need to be manually relit. This is often a good option for those in coastal or windy areas where the flame blowing out is a regular issue.

In the end, we want you to be happy with your purchase from Flambeaux Lighting, and we don’t want you to call back in a year or two frustrated that the electronic ignition system is broken or has to be repaired again

Our standard gas fixtures are designed to burn continually, and that’s how they operate best. So save yourself some money and skip the electronic igniter, you’ll be glad you did.
