Are gas lanterns safe for my home?
Yes. Gas lanterns operate using either natural gas or propane which are safe, clean burning fuels. The fuel for the lanterns is controled by a switch which only emits enough fuel at one time to light the flame. These switches can be turned off in the event the flame goes out or you wish to turn off the lantern.
Will your lanterns work on electricity or just gas?
Yes they will. Most of our lanterns can be powered by either natural gas OR by electricity. During the order process you can choose which one you prefer and when we build your lantern we will include the appropriate parts to operate the lantern. Many of our lanterns use electricity both for outdoor and indoor use. This is one of the most important factors making them safe and effective for indoor use.
Where is a good place to mount my gas lantern?
According to ANZI requires gas lanterns should not be placed near a combustible area. The majority of gas powered lanterns are used to accent the exterior of a home or building. You will see them mounted next to a doorway, hanging from an entrance, porch or even courtyards. Gas lanterns can also be mounted to a post on a fence, gate or yard. Lanterns which use electric power can be mounted almost anywhere! We see them commonly mounted in the interior of a building or home including entrances, doorways, bedrooms and offices. When combined with a dimmer switch indoor electric lanterns can be a wonderful home accent.
How much does it cost to operate a gas outdoor lantern?
Your gas service company may be able to give you an accurate estimate on the cost to run a gas outdoor lantern. However as a rule of thumb it may cost an average of around $10 per month depending on where you live. Our outdoor gas lanterns are rated at 1280 BTUs per hour.
Will my gas lantern blow out when it gets windy?
Yes gas lanterns operate on a natural gas flame and can potentially blow out. However these lanterns are designed for outdoor use and normal conditions should not blow out your lantern. Several factors play into this including the location of the lantern on a given building and the wind patterns in your area. Additionally the glasses we use in these lanterns are rated for higher wind speeds and against breaking which help keep the lanterns lit under most conditions.
How do you turn a gas lantern on or off?
There are 3 control options for our lanterns – manual, electronic igniter and thermocoupler. Manual control means there is a knob on the side of the lantern which regulates the flow of gas. You can adjust this higher or lower depending on your preference of the flame size. Electronic Igniters are often used on indoor fireplaces and allow you to turn the gas flame on or off with the flick of a switch. A Thermocoupler is an important safety feature that regulates the output of gas and will automatically shut off the gas flow if the flame goes out.
Is Flambeaux Lighting a manufacturer or just an online dealer?
We are absolutely a real manufacturer. Flambeaux Lighting is the website for Flambeaux Gas and Electric Lights, located in the greater New Orleans, Louisiana area. Our production facility is located right here in the greater New Orleans area and is staffed by craftsmen who have years of experience in the art of building copper gas lanterns by hand.
Can these lanterns be used indoors?
Absolutely! We recommend choosing the electric power option for safe, worry free indoor use. A great option for indoor use is to mount the lantern using a dimmer switch. A dimmer will allow you to control the brightness of the light and achieve any feel you like.
What flame options are available for Flambeaux gas lanterns?
We offer two flame styles for natural gas lanterns:
-
- The Standard Burning Pilot Jet delivers a lively, flickering flame around 3 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide. It’s our most popular option, ideal for most lantern sizes, and requires minimal maintenance.
- The Magnolia Burner creates a wider, softer flame with less flicker, designed for larger lanterns and a more decorative look.
Both are built in-house and available only on natural gas lanterns.
What is the Standard Burning Pilot Jet?
The standard pilot jet is our default flame — a compact, steady, high-flicker flame that brings out the classic charm of a gas lantern. It’s low-maintenance and works well in both wall-mounted and hanging fixtures. Perfect for that authentic French Quarter glow.
What is the Magnolia Burner?
The Magnolia burner is a wider, fuller flame designed for large lanterns or bold, decorative lighting. While it has less flicker than the pilot jet, it makes a statement and fills out oversized lanterns beautifully. Available for natural gas lanterns only.
What finish options are available for Flambeaux lanterns?
All Flambeaux copper lanterns are available in your choice of finish:
- Natural Copper: A bright, raw copper look that naturally patinas over time.
- Light Oxidation: A pre-oxidized copper with a soft brown tone and subtle age.
- Dark Oxidation (exclusive to Flambeaux): A deep, rich brown finish that mimics a fully aged patina — no waiting required.
All finishes are done in-house, by hand, so you can match your style and get exactly the look you want. No other manufacturer offers the dark oxidation finish.
What is the Natural Copper finish?
Natural copper is bright and polished when new, but will age over time to a darker patina. It’s a great choice if you want your lanterns to develop a unique look naturally as they weather outdoors.
What is the Light Oxidation finish?
Light oxidation gives your lantern a soft brown tone right from the start — like a gently aged lantern. It offers a classic look with less brightness, while still letting the natural copper shine through.
What is the Dark Oxidation finish?
Dark oxidation is a deep, rich brown finish that looks like a lantern that’s been aging outdoors for years — without the wait. This exclusive finish is only available at Flambeaux because we make everything in-house. It’s a customer favorite for that old-world, French Quarter look.
Is the Dark Oxidation finish available anywhere else?
No — the Dark Oxidation finish is exclusive to Flambeaux. It’s one of our signature offerings and a direct result of doing all of our copper finishing in-house. You won’t find this deep, rich brown patina at big-box stores or other lantern makers. It’s only available here because we’re the manufacturer, not just a reseller.
