Can You Use Gas Lanterns Indoors? Yes. Here Is What It Takes
Published as part of the Flambeaux Lighting How We Build It series — real answers to real questions from our customers.
It is one of the questions we hear most often, especially from hospitality clients. Hotels, restaurants, and event venues want the warmth and atmosphere of a real gas flame indoors. The question is whether it can be done safely.
The answer is yes, but it is not the same as an outdoor installation. Two safety features are required when a gas lantern goes inside, and neither one is optional. Steve walks through both in the video below.

The Thermocouple: Your First Line of Defense
A thermocouple is a small heat-sensing device built into the burner assembly. When the flame is burning, it stays open and gas flows normally. If the flame goes out for any reason, whether from a drop in gas pressure, a draft, or anything else, the thermocouple detects the loss of heat and automatically shuts off the gas supply to the fixture.
The lantern will not relight on its own. It stays off until someone manually relights it. That is intentional. No gas accumulates, no undetected hazard sits in the room. It is a simple, reliable mechanism that has been used in gas appliances for decades, and it is a must-have on any indoor application.
The Electronic Ignition System: Control and Monitoring Built In
The second option is an electronic ignition system, which takes the installation a step further. With electronic ignition, the lantern can be turned on and off from a standard wall switch, which is often a requirement in commercial settings where staff need reliable, convenient control over the fixtures.
Beyond the convenience, the system includes internal monitoring components that track gas pressure and confirm the burner is operating correctly at all times. If anything falls outside of normal parameters, the system shuts the fixture off automatically. It is a more involved installation than a thermocouple alone, but for hospitality environments where the lanterns run on a schedule and staff aren’t relighting fixtures by hand, it is the right solution.
For Indoor Use, Both Are Non-Negotiable
The thermocouple and the electronic ignition system are not competing options. In many indoor installations, both are specified together. The thermocouple provides the baseline safety shutoff. The electronic ignition adds control and active monitoring on top of that.
Every Flambeaux gas lantern can be configured for indoor use with either or both of these features built in at the time of manufacture. If you are specifying gas lanterns for a hotel lobby, restaurant, or any interior commercial space, tell us that when you call. We will make sure the fixture is built correctly for the application from the start.
