Gas Lantern Design Influences

One of the most fascinating things about antique gas lanterns is their many shapes and styles.  Gas lanterns make use of natural flames as their power source which incorporates many of the antique styles of lantern making.  And since fire is the oldest source of light and it can be used in many ways to bring light to the darkness.

At Flambeaux Lighting we take pride in offering gas lanterns designed with many of
the traditional influences including:

Federal Style – Federal style refers to the architecture of the founding fathers and is found on many of the original Classic Williamsburg Style Outdoor Style Gas Lantern with Electric Controlbuildings and colonial housing.  These lighting styles consisted of real candle fixtures, candle chandeliers, candelabras, candle lanterns, various candle hurricane lamps and candlesticks.  Many of these gas lanterns were made of natural materials – a tradition we carry on today.  These influences led to the typical "Colonial Style" light fixture that we see today which often feature "S" curved arms.

Lantern styles with this design – Williamsburg, etc.

Victorian – Victorian style is often classified as ornate and this style has inspired some of the most graceful and elegant gas lanterns ever created.  Glass was often intricately etched and cut and the lighting consisted of natural and electric power, often on a hanging or wall mounted fixture.

Georgian Revival – Georgian designs of the early 1900s gave rise to some of the most intricate glass work ever seen.  However during this time electricity was becoming more popular and the “hanging chain” design came into favor as a replacement for gas lanterns.  At the time gas lanterns were often blamed for burning homes down so the “hanging chain” quickly caught on from both a design and safety standpoint.

English Tudor – This British-influenced style is typified by formal heavy look that features sturdy materials and aged or hammered appearance.  This style has remained popular so long that it has influenced many other designs and regions.

French / Spanish – Many of our gas lantern designs have a European feel that is reflected all over New Orleans and the French Quarter.  French and Spanish influences can often be found in New Orleans architecture as well as the furniture and home accessories such as gas lanterns.  The traditional French Quarter design gas lantern is simple, yet elegant and reminds one of French cottages or Spanish estates.
